It’s a sad day when we have to give a thumbs-down to the national broadcaster but with only 10 songs from Triple J’s Hottest 100 of All Time having any female involvement at all (and yes, that includes guest vocalists), we feel the need to remind the nation that people with boobs rock just as hard as those without. So – in no particular order and artists only so you can pick your favourite tunes – here’s the ‘forgotten’ half of the Hottest 100. 1. Bjork 2. PJ Harvey 3. Joni Mitchell 4. Blondie 5. Cat Power 6. Fleetwood Mac 7. Portishead 8. Tori Amos 9. Kate Bush 10. Patti Smith 11. Amy Winehouse 12. Aimee Mann 13. Aretha Franklin 14. Patsy Cline 15. Joanna Newsom 16. The Eurythmics 17. Dusty Springfield 18. Joan as Policewoman 19. Sinead O’Connor 20. Marianne Faithfull 21. Yoko Ono 22. Nina Simone 23. New Buffalo 24. Feist 25. Martha Wainwright 26. The Breeders 27. The Slits 28. Sonic Youth 29. Florence and the Machine 30. Divinyls 31. Coco Rosie 32. Peaches 34. Madonna 35. Goldfrapp 36. B52s 37. Rilo Kiley 38. Joan Armatrading 39. Nina Hagen 40. Joan Jett 41. Siouxsie Sioux 42. Sleater Kinney 43. L7 44. Billie Holiday 45. Gossip 46. CSS 47. Yeah Yeah Yeahs 48. Bikini Kill 49. Sarah Blasko 50. Missy Higgins
Not bad, Frankie, not bad. A couple of questionable inclusions - read: Missy Higgins, who, whilst being a lesbian, isn’t really anything exciting - but on the whole, this is a pretty decent list.
