~ Angus & Julia Stone - Hollywood
I saw A&J before I heard of them, supporting Martha Wainwright in Sheffield last October. My friend and I were completely nonplussed. Angus was catatonic when not singing, leaning against his microphone stand as if his life depended on it. Julia’s voice was irritating (my husband can’t stand how she sounds so I do get it) and except for a funny story about how their drummer had gone home sick to Australia and couldn’t get a visa to come back, so they’d had to borrow Martha’s, I didn’t like them at all.
Except for this song. It’s got Julia singing on it (sometimes Angus does and sometimes they alternate) and it’s clever. It’s probably a good introduction into what they sound like. They’re very lo-fi and folky, and I really like them.
I blame you Hollywood,
for showing me things you never should
show a young girl,
In a cruel world.
Because life’s not a happy ending,
I’m sure there is some,
like Johnny and June,
and maybe other people too.
They all would have been killed
in the sound of music,
they would have found out that
Pinocchio could never tell the truth.
She never would have made it to shore,
the little mermaid. He would have married a whore
from a wealthy family, after all he was royalty.
